PROGRAMS & PROJECTS.

Here you can find a bit more information on our past and current projects.

Tree Nursery Garden Preparation

Women's Mushroom Production Training

Anti-Uranium Mine Campaign

In June 2021 we launched a tree nursery garden to grow tree seedlings, such as pine for timber and other leguminous trees for soil cover and soil nutrient restoration.

In March 2022 we held a three-day mushroom production course for local women. In partnership with internationally-recognised organisation Nirvana Mushrooms, this project was part of our initiative to finanically empower women.

In April 2022 we held an environmental justice campaign opposing the establishment of a uranium mine. The proposed mine did not have procedures to adequately address the impacts on the surrounding communities.

Awareness Campaign on Market
Sanitation and Hygiene

We conducted a series of awareness messages on sanitation and hygiene in marketplaces. We encourage and show the importance of proper waste disposal practices, which reduce the risk of disease (e.g. cholera).

Climate Change Awareness Campaign

We hold public awareness campaigns, educating the communities in Livingstonia on the urgent need to mitigate climate change. Actions suggested included: planting trees, using rocket stoves for cooking, and proper waste disposal.

Elderly Companionship

We visit the elderly members of our community and reach out to them with their needs. Over 90% of the elderly in our community suffer from general body pains and it is heartbreaking to see that their is nothing they can do about it. June is our winter season, and it is especially cold up here in the mountains. The elderly are especially vulnerable to the colder temperatures, so we mobilize various items for them to use, such as; medicine warmth blankets, sugar, soap, foodies..

Girls club

We held a preliminary meeting for local girls to gauge interest for a weekly girls club. The idea is that this is an ongoing, weekly meetup for the girls which they would run themselves with guidance from an older female volunteer. The group would serve as a safe space to discuss sensitive topics and deconstruct menstrual taboos; build solidarity, support networks and sisterhood; and have fun! We also demonstrated how to make reusable absorbent pads, which are not readily available, but cheap and are easy to make.

The meeting revealed much interest for such a group so we are going forward with this idea.

Planting trees with a local youth group

Mbulamaji youth group have been gifted a large piece of sloped land in Livingstonia. Since 2021 they have been replanting it with a mixture of native and softwood trees - over 3,000 so far - for ecosystem regeneration and to prevent soil erosion.

We have been supporting the project since the beginning, and in January 2023, we planted 107 pine trees from our own nursery together with the group. They will provide future generations a source of income and building materials.
